Angel Tree

Again, I am asking for suggestions on my latest project.  Keep in my mind that I have not squared the blocks yet.

This quilt is for a toddler boy registered with our church's Angel Tree project.  I am using Amanda Jean's filmstrip pattern which alternates the rows as shown above.

A friend suggested instead that I layout the quilt this way to spread out the white-bordered blocks.  What do you think?

These two blocks will replace the polka dot blocks on the top row last block on the right and the block on the fourth row fourth block on the right.  I thought there wasn't much of a contrast between that polka dot print and the white.

I am thinking of using the dots for the backing and the stripes for the binding...or should I use the stripes for backing and dots for binding?  I wanted to stay away from your typical novelty fabrics, while at the same time giving it a warm, boyish feel.  I plan to quilt in a grid pattern.

I have made quilts for Project Linus and Margaret's Hope Chest before, and those quilts obviously go to a child, but I've never made a quilt knowing it will go to a specific child, but one that I have not met.  This quilt was requested by a mom for her son for Christmas, so I really want it to be nice.  Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Have an amazing day!!!!

  1. I like the strip for binding, and polka dot for backing, and I really like the ones you are using to replace the ones without enough contrast. One of the reasons for the strip for binding is it looks scrappy, and for the backing it would be harder to get centered so the strips don't get of balanced. You would loose the polka dot in a binding.
What a great addition to the Angel Tree program, it's practical as well as fun. So many need more then toys.

  2. I agree on the stripe binding and polka-dot back. But, if you spread out the white-bordered blocks I think you lose the "film-strip" pattern. It'd still be a super-cute quilt, just a different quilt!

  3. I like both settings and as far as I'm concerned, you can't beat a striped bias binding! It's going to be a wonderful quilt and I'm sure the little boy who receives it is going to love it! How nice of you to help make his Christmas extra special!

  4. I like your friends suggestion to spread out the white blocks, yes...it looses the film strip effect, but in the long run makes for a fun kid quilt. The polka dot on the back and a strip binding will make for a fantastic quilt! Thanks for granting a mom's Christmas wish!

  5. I vote for spreading the white blocks out. The film strip is a great idea, but I think a toddler will enjoy the "every other" concept, more.

  6. I like the second layout the best and really like the blocks that you are putting in as the replacements!

  7. Yep - I think spreading the blocks out works well for this little boy quilt and definitely love the stripes for binding. This is such a wonderful gift for you to make :)

  8. I have blocks cut for that very same quilt... I think I could just copy all of Amanda Jeans quilts and never get tired of it. Your quilt is darling! I like it laid out both ways. Maybe you better make two? Ha, ha!

I always love stripes for binding.

  9. I love stripes for bindings so that would be my suggestion for that. And even though you'll loose the film strip look I think alternating the blocks would look better for a kids quilt.

  11. I will have to go with the mixing up of the blocks. While both layouts look great I think for this particular one mixing would suit.
I agree with the consensus of polka dot backing and striped binding.
It is going to be something this little boy will treasure.

  12. I have to go with striped binding cut on the bias. The quilt will be lovely, whatever you choose to do, but I'd vote for the Filmstrip setting...it's more unique. JMHO

  14. Wow, you've gotten some great comments on this one. I like the filmstrip setting. However are you going to decide? For sure, stripes, cut on the bias, for the binding and dots for backing.
