How Small

is too small when it comes to saving fabric scraps?

This was a question I kept asking myself two weeks ago when I cleaned and organized my studio....which stayed clean for about twenty minutes, I'll have you know!

When sorting through the way too many several piles of fabric leftover from previous projects, I made several stacks for certain planned projects such as a mug rug, string quilt, and needle book; a stack of solids; stacks of printed fabrics sorted by color, but I kept coming back to that question of how small is too small?

I don't like to throw anything away, especially fabric, but this doesn't help my attempt at decluttering ;-)
For those questionable sizes of fabric, I decided to place them in a ziploc bag, and I plan to ask Tonya her opinion....in person.  Yep, that's right, in person!
Tonya is honoring us with her presence this Saturday for an Unruly Workshop which will include free piecing letters and crumb quilting, and I. CAN'T. WAIT!!!!

Wonder what she does about those small pieces of leftover batting?

Have an amazing day!!!

  1. First I'm impressed your sewing room stayed clean for 15 min. Next I'm so excited for you and your workshop with Tonya. Have tons of fun!

  2. Great post! This is a question I've been asking myself too, especially since I'm fond of paper-piecing miniatures. Still, I recently made a "rule" (which I still break) of keeping nothing smaller than 1.5" square.

It'll be very interesting to see what Tonya & others say on the subject.

  5. Oh, have fun seeing Tonya. She has a real flair!! I put all my smallest scraps in a bag to send to the preschool for crafts, but then sometimes while I'm waiting for the bag to get full enough to take, I dig through and take some out to use myself ... so who knows ... ;-)

  6. I'm a keeper of nearly every scrap! I save selveges for a friend. I save really skinny strips for my art students to weave. I save "crumbs" for mini crazy quilt blocks. And I save small pieces too. The important part is to have them in clear boxes, clearly labeled! (It's not hoarding if it's organized, right?) :D

  7. I use my batting strips to dust a bit! They are the best dust catchers ever....so i clean up under my sewing machine and around my area.

  8. I so go through the same dilemma. I have been more ruthless lately lately though. I only keep scraps of fabrics I can't bear to part with. If you know anyone that appliques they might like the scraps.
